Quill Converter: change any sound or video file into the format you need
Got an audiobook your player will not open? A lecture video when you only want the sound? Quill Converter changes audio and video files from one format to another, right on your own computer. You add your files, pick what you want them to become, and press Convert. You can even hear fifteen seconds of the result first. It is free, and it works with your screen reader from the moment it opens.
Version 1.0.0, released September 28, 2026. You need Windows 10 or later, 64-bit. Most people should pick the installer. It adds Quill Converter to your Start menu, and it can add "Convert with Quill Converter" to the menu you get when you right-click a file in File Explorer. The portable ZIP is for running from a folder or a USB stick; it keeps its settings next to QuillConverter.exe. Both downloads already include everything the app needs, so nothing else downloads later. To get a newer version, use Help > Check for Updates (Ctrl+Alt+U).
Your first conversion, step by step
When Quill Converter opens, you are in the list of files to convert. From there:
- Press Alt+A to add files, or Alt+O to add a whole folder. You can also copy files in File Explorer and paste them into the list with Ctrl+V.
- Press Alt+T to go to Convert to, and arrow through the formats. Each one tells you what it is good for, like "MP3 audio, plays everywhere".
- If you want the sound cleaned up, press Alt+E for Effects and pick one, such as "Clean up speech". If not, skip this step.
- Press Alt+Y to hear fifteen seconds of how the new file will sound. Press it again to stop.
- Press Ctrl+Enter to convert.
You hear how far along it is at 25, 50 and 75 percent, and it tells you when it is done. Your new files go into a folder called Converted, next to the first file in your list. Your original files are never changed. If something goes wrong, press Ctrl+R and the Conversion Report tells you why, in plain words.
What else it can do for you
- Open almost anything. It reads more than 80 kinds of files and writes 34, including MP3, M4A, M4B audiobooks, FLAC, WAV and Opus, plus nine video formats such as MP4 and MKV. It only offers the formats it can really make.
- Get the sound out of a video. Pick a sound format and you get just the audio. Or make a new, smaller video for your phone. If a video has a described-audio track, it comes along.
- Save audio from a web link. Press Alt+L, paste a YouTube link, and choose one video, a whole playlist, or a channel's newest videos. The files come in order, ready to listen to.
- Fix the sound while you convert. The effects are named for the problem they fix: clean up speech, make a podcast, remove hum or background noise, cut long silences, or make film dialogue easier to hear. Press Ctrl+E for Custom Effects if you want to choose each setting yourself.
- Keep your chapters. If a book has chapters, they come along. You can also write your own in a plain text file, with lines like "0:00 Welcome". The Chapter Workbench (Ctrl+H) lets you listen to a book and set chapters where you hear them.
- Join files or split them. Ctrl+J joins a folder of chapter files into one audiobook. Ctrl+Shift+S splits a book back into its chapters, or cuts a long recording into pieces.
- Fix the title and cover. Ctrl+T opens the Tag Editor, where you can change the title, artist and cover art of MP3, M4A, M4B and MP4 files.
- Find any command by name. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S, type part of what you want, such as "tags", and press Enter. Ctrl+W tucks Quill Converter into the tray while a long job runs, and File > Show and Hide Key lets you choose one key to bring it back from any program.
- Ask a person for help. Help > Get Help from Support (Ctrl+Alt+F2) starts an email to our support team in your own mail program, with the details they need already filled in.
